"Miss England 3"Miss England 3 carried the designation K1. She was built by Thornycroft of Southampton and was driven by Kaye Don to two World Water Speed Records in July 1932, the top speed being 119.81 mph (192.82 kph). Both of these records were set on Loch Lomond in Scotland. Like Miss England 2, this craft was powered by two Rolls-Royce R-type V12 aero-engines. However, these powerplants drove two propellers, whereas its predecessor had one. The engines - which benefitted from improvements in supercharging, generating a maximum of 3,000 horsepower at 3,000 rpm - were geared to drive the two propellers at 9,000 rpm at this output. Miss England 3 can still be seen today, as she is displayed in the Science Museum, London. She measures 35 feet (11 metres) in length and is 9.2 feet (2.9 metres) wide. |
