"Bluebird" K3

Bluebird K3

The first of Sir Malcolm Campbell's speed-record boats, Bluebird K3 was built by Saunders-Roe on the Isle of Wight and was driven to three World Water Speed Records between 1937 and 1938, culminating at 130.93 mph. The first two records were set on Lake Maggiore in Italy, while the last was set on Austria's Lake Hallwyl.

Bluebird K3 was designed by Fred Cooper of Saunders-Roe, powered by a 2,500-horsepower, V12 Rolls-Royce R aero-engine transplanted from the Bluebird car, and was constructed primarily of double-skinned mahogany. Of his first record with K3, Sir Malcolm remarked, "Holding Bluebird at her maximum speed was more difficult than steering the car at 300 mph!"

She survives to this day, as part of a private collection in Sussex consisting primarily of historic motor-vehicles.
